I didn’t start sketchbook journaling for the reasons you might think...
As a business owner selling my own art, it felt a little soul crushing to only have 20% of my time free to actually MAKE art. Initially it allowed me to do something creative everyday while wearing the many hats of an entrepreneur.
But it was not an easy start! I had stacks of unfinished sketchbooks and journals from over the years – how would this one not end up in the same stack, abandoned…another thing left unfinished in my life?
I figured out a way, day by day, mark by mark…now, 20 years later, and 58 volumes in I have a pseudo collection of ‘auto-biographical novels’ of my life; a place where I have recorded silly mundane things to world events, to the heart breaking heavy losses, health issues, healing and more. This practice has been transformational in getting to know who I am and what I believe in and what my purpose is in the world.
Each of our lives is equally precious and important, journaling is the perfect way to introduce your outer self to your inner self, experience magical realizations and have FUN doing it.
Teaching others how to access this magic brings me so much joy...I love watching the the transformation in my students' sketchbooks and hearing them describe it in their lives, as well!
